Observer and the Observed - Brain Games - Observer and the Observed - Brain Games - I am independent of the observer and the observed and remains unaffected at all times

“Brain games” is a reality TV series on National Geographic Channel that explores how our brain functions in certain situations.

One of the episodes was about Free Money.  The money was kept in a glass box in a booth and people could take as much money as they wanted for free.

Watch these videos in this order, before reading further.

As we have seen three experiments were carried out.
  • With a man in the booth
  • Without no one is watching the booth
  • With just giant eyes picture
When the man was in the booth, the people were hesitant to take the money.  When the man wasn't in the booth, some people took the money as much as possible.  With giant eyes staring at them, people were really skeptical and afraid to take the money.

In these three experiments there is an observer and the observed.  The observer sees the observed and reacts accordingly.

What is the observed?  Is the observed an actual object i.e. the man, empty booth and giant eyes?  Here the observed is the perceived notion of the object, which is independent of the object.

When the man (actual object) is in the booth the perceived notion of the observer could be one or more of the following.  The man in the booth shouldn’t take me as a greedy person; I shouldn't degrade myself in front of him; I don’t care whatever he thinks as I am in a dire need of money.

When there was no one in the booth, the perceived notion would include no one is watching me and I could take advantage of it, someone may take it and I don't want to be a loser, etc.  With the giant eyes (just a picture object) the perceived notion could be someone is watching my actions, there should be some catch in offering the free money and so on. The same object can be perceived in many different ways.  Thus the object is independent of the perceived notion.

As we have seen in the video, the perceived notion may also vary person to person.  This perceived notion is nothing but the thoughts about the object.

Who is perceiving these objects?  It is the observer.  Who is the observer?  The observer is one of the several snapshots of the earlier observations (observed). Throughout my life the observer has accumulated many observations.  Within me there are many such observers.  The observers would include: money brings happiness, know that money should be earned but not taken, taking the free money is not cheating, since they are offering for free why can't one take advantage of it?  Thus the observer is also made up of thoughts.

In other words, among the many past observations (perceived notions) one of them becomes the observer and looks at the observed (perceived notion of the object) in the present moment. The observer or the ego is nothing but the identification with one of the past perceived notions (observed thoughts) and looks at the currently perceived notion (other thought and not the actual object) in the present moment and takes actions. Thus, both the observer and the observed are one and the same and they are nothing but thoughts.

The division is not between the observer and the object.  The division is created between the observer and observed.  The dialog is between the observer and the observed, not with the actual object.  Should I take the money?  If I take, what others will think of me?  Is there a catch?  Can it be trusted?  Even after taking the money, would I feel guilty? If I didn't take it, would I regret?

In the Indian epic Mahabharatha, if we take Arjuna's case, there were many such observers.  One of them was the perceived notion of enmity with Kauravas.  And the other one was the perceived notion of the Guru.  Yet another one was with the relationships.  Besides, there was also the perceived notion of the society.

With the perceived notion (Observer) of fighting with Kauravas, Arjuna arrived at the battlefield.  When he took the position as the grandson of Bhishma and disciple (another observer) to his Guru it over weighed the fighting observer, duality arose in his mind.  He also lamented that the society would go to doldrums as a result of the war, when he identified with protecting the society (yet another observer). Even after taking the decision of not to fight (another observer), he was depressed indicating the conflict in his mind.   When the observer (the past observations) changed, it had an effect on the present observations, creating conflict within Arjuna’s mind.  Thus the division and the resultant conflict is not external but within himself.

Similarly, throughout my life I have accumulated countless observers (past observations) and these observers interacts with the present observation.  Depending on the hat I wear (observer) it creates different types of conflicts with the observed.  I may do several analyses to resolve this conflict including, criticizing my behavior, blaming the situation, people and / or the creator.  Sometimes I would temporarily manage or escape from the situation, but nothing seems to resolve the conflicts completely. There is always one or other conflicts going on internally.  What is the way out of these conflicts? How to work with the observer and the observed?

Now, the question to ask is if both the observer and the observed are nothing but thoughts, who am I then?  When the mind becomes quiet and completely and attentively listens the conflict between the observers and the observed (both are nothing but thoughts) and questions the observer, then understanding comes that I am independent of the observer and the observed and remains unaffected at all times.  I just bring awareness of this internal conflict without judging, evaluating, taking positions, criticizing or trying to do something about it.  If I root myself in that indivisible awareness, stillness, I will recognize that I am the peace and it is impossible to have conflict without any kind of division.

The Self Knowledge has nothing to do with the action.   Self Knowledge cannot be attained as a result of any action.  It cannot be attained, created or produced through the process of purification or transformation.  It is not of the nature of a doer or an enjoyer.  It is the substratum upon which all things (thoughts) rise and fall and the nature of Self is peace which remains unaffected by the apparent rise or fall of its contents.

Movie: Nizhal Nijamagirathu

Song: Ilakkanam maarudho ilakkiyam aanadho

Youtube Link to the Song:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnRb4kqhHQY

Background of the Song:  The seeker recognizes the Self, God, Truth within and noticed that the definition of Love, Bliss, Peace, God and the sense of self has changed totally.

Summary of the Song:
  • The definition of Love, Self, Peace, Joy and God has changed and become the Truth that defines these qualities.
  • All this time I presumed the actor who is playing the role, as the true “I” and that belief incorrectly defined those true qualities.
  • When the veiling is removed, the Self is recognized and the inherent Love reveals itself.  Recognition of Self has bestowed the grace.
  • Oh Lord! I put a veil in the form of ignorance between you and me.  Can you remove the ignorance and show me the Truth?
  • I am tottering up and down in this life and I do not find an infallible, strong base to keep me at peace at all times except You.  Geetha says "you will find your way back again to your true Self"
  • I know that your grace follows me in the background at all times.  Today I have seen you in Reality, within me and in all.
  • What is the relationship between you and I?  It is the relationship of a wave with the Ocean (water).  There is no “I” but YOU – indivisible oneness.

Has the definition of grammar changed?  Has it become the literature that defines the grammar?
Spiritual Contemplation:
Has the definition of qualities: Love, Self, Peace, Joy and God changed?  Has it become the Truth that defines these qualities?  Previously, Love, Joy, Peace, God and sense of self, are derived from outside.  The experiences of those true qualities are pretty much dependent on external situations.  Since they are derived, they are just reflection, it was always a struggle to keep at them and wasn't complete.  Now through self-enquiry I recognized the true Self.  With that recognition, I understood that those true qualities are within and they are neither related to external objects nor dependent on them.  Thus the definition of Love, Joy, Peace and Self has changed and become the Truth that defines those true qualities.

இதுவரை நடித்தது அது என்ன வேடம்?  இது என்ன பாடம்?
idhuvarai naditthadhu adhu enna vaedam?  idhu enna paadam?
What is the roled I played hitherto?  What kind of lesson is this?
Spiritual Contemplation:
I have taken many roles such as son, student, employee, husband and dad.   The actor in those roles goes through many emotions and expresses concerns, anxiety, sorrow and other feelings and they are inevitable.  Now I understand it is just a play.    What kind of role I played hitherto?  The underlying role of all the roles is the identification of “I” with the body and mind.  What kind of lesson I got out of this?  Now, I understand the real I remains there unaffected in spite of many acts performed in the play.  I also realize, if I identify with body and mind, I look for love in the external objects and end up in failure.  Now, I recognize I am the Self, Love, Joy and Peace.

How come today there is fragrance from the jasmine that was erstwhile a stone? Why there is a song from the music that was hitherto wind?
Was a white cloud, now a dark (rainy) cloud; is it necessary to say it is a rainy season?
The one who so called cupid has opened the eyes and has given the femininity
Spiritual Contemplation
Erstwhile the “I” has been identified with the body (matter).   Since the matter doesn’t have the true quality of love on its own, it longed for love from external objects.  How come today the Love (fragrance of jasmine) is boundless from the Self that used to identify with the body (stone)?  All along, the “I” remained as it is, exhibiting its Love all the time.  But with the veiling due to the identification with the body, the love wasn’t recognizable.  When the veiling is removed, the inherent Love reveals itself.
Why there is a supreme bliss (song) from the Self that has been seeking pleasures through the body (wind)?  Through self-enquiry, recognized the true Self (not identifying with the body), and that I am the Love as well as the Supreme bliss.  All along I am THAT love and supreme bliss itself.
Was a limited person (white cloud), now recognized I am the Whole (rainy cloud).
It is needless to say this recognition has opened up the eye and bestowed the Grace?

In my life that resembles a river, I saw a shore (that is you).  But, in your heart I found a defect
As I do not understand (defect is not with you) I put a veil.  Though I put a veil, I didn’t restrain myself.
Can you remove the veil and explain the way?
Spiritual Contemplation
Like a river, my life keeps on moving, couldn't hold on to it and I found you are the shore for me.   However, oh Lord!   The creation is not working the way I wanted to be, some of my expectations are not met and I find defects in your creation.
Since I do not understand you or your creation, my Lord, I put a veil in the form of ignorance between you and me.  Though I put a veil, I didn't restrain myself not thinking about (praying to) you.
Oh Lord!  Due to the ignorance I am unable able to find a way to work through in this creation.  Can you remove the ignorance and show me the Truth?

I am a tottering child, my heart is pure.  I do not have a prop to sing lullaby for me.
All the Gods will sing for you, if they don’t will they be called God?
The door will open again for your way utters Geetha
Spiritual Contemplation
I keep my heart pure as much as possible, but still I am tottering in this up & down life!  I do not have an infallible, strong base who can keep me at peace all times.
All the saints, sages and all types of Gods sing for you (the one who resides within all beings / objects), if they don’t, can they hold their place there?
Geetha utters “You have lost your way by identifying the body & mind, but by self-enquiry you will find your way back again to your true Self ”.

God follows as a shadow and provides grace; now I see that the God has come in Real and saves me.
Who are you?  Who am I?  How is this relationship possible?  It is the bond from the previous birth
Spiritual Contemplation
Sometimes I feel you don’t pay attention to my praises or complains whether they are small or big.
But I know that your grace follows me in the background at all times.  Today I have seen you in Reality, within me and in all.
Oh Lord! Who are you?  Who am I?  What is the relationship between you and I?  It is the relationship of a wave with the Ocean (water) i.e., the wave recognizing that it is nothing but the Ocean.  There is no “I” but YOU – indivisible oneness.
